Swinderby is a village in Kesteven, the south-western part of Lincolnshire. The village stands just north of the A46 road, eight miles south-west of Lincoln and six miles north-east of Newark-on-Trent, the latter in Nottinghamshire. Swinderby lies within a rural agricultural community and covers an area of 2,200 acres. The village population (including Morton Hall) was recorded as 648 at the 2011 census.
Churches
The parish church, All Saints, is predominately Norman and Early English in form and origin, though restoration was carried out in 1854, 1879 and 1910.[1][2][3]
In 1872 there was a Wesleyan chapel in the village: the chapel closed in 1998.[4] It later became a gypsy mission centre; the Life & Light Mission Hall.[5]
History
The name 'Swinderby' is of Old Norse origin, and assumed to have originated either from "sundri by" ('southern farmstead or village'), or "svin djur by" ('Swine-beast farmstead').[6] The Domesday Book calls the village "Sunderby" and "Suindrebi".[7]
The village has early forebears: Roman pottery has been found hereabouts and the Fosse Way passes nearby.
Some village buildings date back to the 17th century.
Community
The village has a public house, a church, a village hall, two playing fields and a primary school with nursery.
The school is the All Saints' Church of England Primary School.
Swinderby is close to the site of RAF Swinderby, now closed as a Royal Air Force station but which holds a bi-monthly antique and collectors fair that has been featured on BBC1's Bargain Hunt.
