Howdenshire

Howdenshire is a wapentake in the East Riding of Yorkshire centred around the town of Howden. The main core comprises the ancient parishes of Howden and Eastrington, along with Blacktoft, a detached part of Brantingham parish (otherwise in Harthill wapentake) which long had a separate civic identity.

In the Saxon period, the district was under the control of the monastery at Peterborough, but it was confiscated by Edward the Confessor, and then given to the Bishop of Durham by William I.
