Claythorpe Mill is a popular local visitor attraction in Claythorpe (near Alford) in Lincolnshire. It ceased as a working mill in 1977 when the last miller died. It is a Grade II listed building.[1]
The mill was for a time a restaurant. Now the timber mill buildings in a picturesque setting are a visitor attraction, with wildfowl gardens, animals and a cafe.
History
The mill was opened as the Empire Mills in the 18th century, built to grind corn.[2] It was largely rebuilt in the 19th century, and the top floor was destroyed by fire and rebuilt again in 1890.
Originally the mill was powered by a water wheel: in 1890 though a turbine was installed, which is housed at the rear of the building.
Although the mill ceased operation in 1977, the steel wheel and gearing are still there. It was the last regularly working water mill in Lincolnshire.
