Castle Hill is a low hill, reaching just 253 feet above sea level, on the eastern edge of the town of Great Torrington in the north of Devon. Its west side is a steep slope dropping down to the River Torridge, and forming part of the long escarpment reaching around much of the town above the river.
A Norman castle was built here, which was later replaced by a mediæval castle. However the castles were long preceeded: there was probably an Iron Age hill fort on Castle Hill.[1]
Another hill fort is to be found just two miles to the south-east in a loop in the river and also known as Castle Hill.
