Brackenthwaite is a hamlet standing alone in the lanes some three miles south-east of the town of Wigton in Cumberland.

Name

The name is recorded as Bracanethuaite in the 12th Century: it is believed to be from the Old Norse brakni meaning 'bush' and þveit, a common Norse village suffix.

There is an identically named village elsewhere in the county: Brackenthwaite that is south of here and about six miles south of Cockermouth.)
