It was photographed from the air by the United States Navy on a trans-Antarctic flight, 13 January 1956, and, in association with the names of other crew members on this flight grouped in the area, named after Staff Sergeant Robert C. Spann, USMC, navigator of the P2V-2N Neptune aircraft.
