Saltash Passage and the Royal Albert Bridge seen from the A38 Tamar Bridge

The Cornish patch is an area of just over 100 acres on the Devon side of the Tamar estuary anciently belonging to the manor of Trematon. It therefore forms a detached part of Cornwall locally in Devon.

Its purpose was to provide a foothold for the ancient ferry which belonged to the manor, and today both the A38 Tamar Bridge and Royal Albert Bridge both land in the Cornish patch on the eastern bank of the Tamar. It forms part of the ancient parish of St Budeaux which has long since been absorbed into the city of Plymouth.

Saltash Passage in the Cornish patch is the last remnant of the former ferry service.
