Carrauntoohil Tooth
County Kerry
Range: MacGillycuddy's Reeks
Summit: 3,146 feet V79268389

Carrauntoohil Tooth or The Bones, sometimes known as Knockoughter, is mountainous peak in County Kerry, within Ireland's highest range, MacGillycuddy's Reeks.

Carrauntoohil Tooth is in form the highest point of the rocky arête which stretches between Carrauntoohil in the north and Beenkeeragh to the south. It reaches a height of 3,146 feet above sea level.

The summit of The Bones is a fine vantage point over beauteous scenes in clear weather: apart from the sight across Kerry, the Coomloughra Horseshoe, taking the toughened walker over Caher – Carrauntoohil – Carrauntoohil Tooth – Beenkeeragh, can be seen in its full extent.

Ascent

The Bones may be reached having climbed Carrauntoohil or Beenkeragh and on the scramble between the two of them. The Bones from Carrauntoohil are along the ridge on a path clearly defined on the mountain's southern side, and the ridge runs off only 100 yards or so southwest down the shoulder from Carrauntoohil's summit, and it is a narrow ridge along much of its length, dropping away sharply to either side. From the ridge the climb up to its highest peak, The Bones, is over windswept rock requiring steady balance and steady nerves.
