Cainscross is a suburban village in Gloucestershire, within the conglomeration of villages and suburban growth attached to Stroud: Cairncross is on the town's western outskirts and the town centre is just a mile and a half to the east. The wider parish includes the communities of Ebley, Cashes Green and Hamwell Leaze.

The population of the civil parish was 6,680 in 2001.

The village is well served with local shops and amenities, including a Post Office and a medium-sized supermarket. It is well connected to Stroud, only a twenty-five minute walk away, with frequent bus services there and beyond, and out to Gloucester and Cheltenham.

The Stroudwater Canal is easily accessible to the south, as is Selsley Common.
