Arlington is a Cotswold village in the parish of Bibury, in Gloucestershire. Bibury itself stands on the east side of the River Coln and Arlington on the west. It may be considered a part of Bibury.
History
In 1066 Arlington had two mills and continued to flourish based on the wool trade until the 18th century.[1]
In the Seventeenth Century, John Custis II of Arlington emigrated to the Colony of Virginia, where in 1675 he built a palatial four-story brick mansion and named it "Arlington":[2][3] This holding became Arlington Estate on the south shore of the Potomac River, opposite the future site of the city of Washington.
Sights of the village
Arlington Row is a nationally notable architectural conservation area depicted on the inside cover of all United Kingdom passports.[4] The cottages were built in 1380 as a monastic wool store.[5] This was converted into a row of cottages for weavers in the seventeenth century.[6] It has been used as a film and television location, most notably for the films Stardust (2007) and Bridget Jones's Diary.
Arlington Manor was built in the 17th century.[7] It has an adjoining 18th century barn.[8]
Church
On the green is a Baptist church built in 1833.[9]
