Kilphedir is a small, remote settlement, which sits beside the River Helmsdale in the Strath of Kildonan, also known as 'Strath Ullie' in Sutherland. The Kilphedir Burn runs of the hills to join the Helmsdale River here. The village is found three miles from Helmsdale, which stands at the foot of the valley on the county's east coast, and three miles overland from the border of Caithness.
To north and south are bare, empty hills. Close by Kilphedir there are the remains of ancient settlements, including broch and a chambered cairn.
The name of the hamlet is from the Gaelic Cill Pheadair, meaning 'Peter's church'.[1]
The River Helmsdale flows past Kilphedir, and the A897 road following down its valley.
