Beinn Liath Mhor Fannaich itself stands at 3,130 feet at its summit, which marks the border between Cromartyshire and Ross-shire; beonging to Cromarty is the Forest of Fannich encompassing most of the range.

The name Beinn Liath Mhor Fannaich is Gaelic, and means "Mountain of the great stone of Fannich".

Beinn Liath Mhor Fannaich rises up in a great bulk just to the north of the main Fannichs ridge. It offers good views of the neighbouring mountains of the Fannichs and also over to the Beinn Dearg range.
