Berkhamsted CastleBerkhamsted Castle is a Norman motte-and-bailey castle at Berkhamsted in Hertfordshire. The castle was built during the Norman conquest in the 11th century to control a key route between London and the Midlands. The castle was built by Robert of Mortain, William the Conqueror's half-brother, and later became a royal castle and residence. Today it belongs to the Duchy of Cornwall. The castle triggered the birth of the town of Berkhamsted, which grew up alongside it, replacing the old village which is today's Northchurch. (Read more) |
