Stonethrow Ridge
British Antarctic Territory
Deception Island
Summit: 1,066 feet 62°57’50"S, 60°43’27"W

Stonethrow Ridge is a snow-covered ridge running north-to-south, rising to 325 feet to the west of Fumarole Bay on Deception Island, in the South Shetland Islands, part of the British Antarctic Territory.

Vapour Col lies to the south of the ridge.

Survey and name

The Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey carried out a survey of the island in January 1954, and following this survey the name 'Stonethrow' was chosen because of the large number of rocks and stones at the base of the steep east face of the ridge which have been thrown off the ridge.

Antarctic Specially Protected Area

The western part of the ridge forms part of an Antarctic Specially Protected Area (ASPA 140), comprising several separate sites on Deception Island, and designated as such primarily for its botanic and ecological values.[1]
