Harlech Castle, Merionethshire

Harlech Castle

Harlech Castle stands on a crag within the village of Harlech in Merionethshire, overlooking the sea. It was built at the command of King Edward I in the late thirteenth century as part of his "Iron Ring" of castles around Snowdonia.

The castle played an important part in several wars; it withstood the siege of Madog ap Llywelyn in 1294, but fell to Owain Glyndŵr in 1404 until recaptured in 1409. A seven year siege during the Wars of the Roses is memorialised in the song Men of Harlech. (Read more)
