Skellig Michael

Skellig Michael is an island rising dramatically out of the Atlantic Ocean, seven miles west of the Iveragh Peninsula in County Kerry. It is the larger and more famous of the two Skellig Islands.

An early Christian monastery was founded on the island at some point between the 6th and 8th century, and was continuously occupied until its abandonment in the late 12th century. The remains of this monastery stand on the top of the island: bare beehive huts of stark dry stone construction, resilient against the fearsome Atlantic storms, telling of men likewise stark and resilient against the storms.
