Location

The village s to be found on a minor road about a mile and a half away from the A6 road and about a mile away from the M6 motorway: the motorway's Southwaite Services are named after the village.

The West Coast Main Line runs through the middle of the village and the River Petteril is nearby. Once there was a railway station here, called 'Southwaite' but it was closed in 1952.

Nearby are such villages as Ivegill, Low Hesket and High Hesket, and the hamlet of Mellguards.
