Skelton is a small village about seven miles north-west of Penrith in Cumberland. It is on the former route of the B5305 road, which now bypasses the village, about a mile to the north.
The village has a primary school, shop, pub, and two churches: Church of England and Methodist.
Close to the village is the Skelton transmitting station and a stately home, Hutton-in-the-Forest, the family home of Lord Inglewood.
Skelton Agricultural Show is one of the largest in Cumberland and takes place on the first Saturday in July at Hutton-in-the-Forest.
The wider parish of Skelton includes the villages and hamlets of Ellonby, Lamonby, Unthank, Unthank End, Skelton Wood End, Laithes, Hutton End, Hutton Row, New Rent, Braithwaite and Middlesceugh.
History
The village was formerly part of a large parish named Hutton-in-the-Forest, hence the name of the local stately home. The name 'Forest' refers to the royal hunting ground of Inglewood Forest which included all of the present day Skelton Parish.
