Benyellary is one of five mountains forming the Range of the Awful Hand in the Galloway Hills. It is in Kirkcudbrightshire, and forms the "thumb" of the Awful Hand, the southernmost of them; the others of the range spreading over the bounds of Kirkcudbrightshire and Ayrshire. Benyellary rises to 2,359 feet above sea level.
The name of the moutauiin appears to be form the Gaelic Beinn Iolaire, meaning "eagle mountain".
