Oughterside is a village in western Cumberland, two miles from.Aspatria and six miles from Cockermouth, and close to the fells of the Lake District spreading out to the south-east.

In the village is the Manor House which caters for tourists visiting the nearby Lake District. It is a small place itself though with a population of just 625 recorded at the 2011 census.

History

Coal mining becgan in the area in 1902, and in time a mine was opened by the village by the Oughterside Coal Co. Ltd. (later succeeded by the Oughterside Coal Co.(1928) Ltd.) [1] though it was a brief operation compared with those in other parts of the land. In 1923 when the Bullgill company took over, producing an annual output of 100,000 tons of coal used for coking, household use and for steam.

The manor house

The manor house, built in the 18th century was a gentleman farmer's country home, surrounded by stunning views. The manor house is now a family run bed and breakfast. The manor has eight acres of tranquil gardens with one acre designated for tourists to camp out in caravans and tents.[2]

The manor, as well as being used as a bed and breakfast, served as a setting for a book of short stories written by Harry Lowman, entitled "Gus and the Manor House Bears": Gus was the family dog who lived at the manor house.[3]
