The Barony of Clankelly

Clankelly is a barony of Fermanagh.[1] It is the only barony in Fermanagh not connected to Lough Erne.[1]

Clankelley is bordered by two other baronies in the United Kingdom: Coole to the southwest; and Magherastephana to the northwest.[1] It also borders two baronies in the Republic of Ireland: Monaghan to the northeast; and Dartree to the southeast.

Clankelly takes its name from Cellach, son of Tuathal, a king of the Ui Chremthainn. The MacDonnell (Mac Domhnaill) sept of the Clann Cheallaigh are noted here, and by the 13th century, the O'Cannons (Ó Canannain) who had been ousted as kings of Cinel Conaill settled here for a period.[2][3]

Villages and parishes

The main village of the barony is Rosslea.

The civil parishes in Clankelly are:[4]

  • Clones
  • Drummully (split with barony of Coole)
  • Gallon (split with baronies of Coole and Knockninny)
