Grand Turk Beach

The Turks Islands form a group of small islands in the Caribbean Sea lying to the southeast of the much larger Caicos Islands, the two groups forming together the British overseas territory of the Turks and Caicos Islands. The Turks Islands are separated from the Caicos Islands by the Turks Island Passage.

The capital of the territory and residence of the Governor is at Cockburn Town on Grand Turk, the largest of the Turks Islands.

The Turks received their name form the indigenous Turk's Cap Cactus (Melocactus intortus), which grows here and indeed on the Caicos Islands. The cactus was given that name from the shape of its distinctive cap, which to early explorers resembled a fez.
