Ailsworth or Ailesworth is a village in the Soke of Peterborough in the north-east of Northamptonshire. The village is four and a half miles west of Peterborough.
The 2011 Census recorded a population of 559, in 248 households.
History
The name of the village is from the Old English Ægelesweoþ: the Domesday Book of 1086 records it as Eglesworde. The name means "Ægel’s enclosure ".[1]
The common lands of Ailsworth and the neighbouring parish of Castor were not inclosed until 1898.[2]
In 1931 a local Women’s Institute was founded, which was commemorated fity years later in 1981 with a new village sign, on the boundary with the neighbouring village of Castor.[1] A new sign was erected in 2021 and the old sign sold off.
The £9 million dual-carriageway Ailsworth and Castor Bypass, which is part of the A47 road, was opened in September 1991.[3]
Churches
Ailsworth lies in the ecclesiastical parish of Castor.
There is no Church of England church in the village, but there is a Methodist Chapel.
About the village
In Ailsworth there is a medical practice, village shop, coffee house, recreation ground and children's play area.[4]
The village does not have a public house with the nearest being The Prince of Wales Feathers and The Royal Oak in neighbouring Castor. The last pub that was open in the village was The Wheatsheaf which is now a private home situated at the end of Peterborough Road.[5]
