The Halladale River flows through the north-east of Sutherland in a beautiful valley oxymoronically named Strath Halladale.
The river rises in the Flow Country of north-western Sutherland, within a nature reserve simply known as 'the Flows'. It flows north-north-west to a Forsinard, a hamlet with a railway halt, and from here runs due north, pursued by the A897, which runs all down Strath Halladale.
The river becomes tidal as it passes beneath the A836, the north coast road, at Melvich, and enters the sea in Melvich Bay.
