Burpham is a town forming a northern suburb of Guildford in Surrey. It has one primary school, a secondary academy a modest parade of shops and the Sutherland Memorial Park. One of Guildford's out-of-town supermarkets lies in Burpham too.
Burpham is bordered by the neighbouring villages of Merrow to the south-east and Jacobs Well to the north-west. From Merrow, Burpham is separated by the New Guildford Line, the railway line between Guildford and Effingham Junction.
Between Burpham and Jacobs Well is Burpham Court Farm Park, a rare breeds conservation centre that straddles the River Wey.
Burpham appears in Domesday Book as Borham. It was held partly by Turald (Thorold) from Roger de Montgomery and by Godfric from Thurold. Its assets were: 3 hides; one mill worth 15s, 6½ ploughs, 25 acres of meadow, woodland worth 83 hogs. It rendered £8.[1]
Parish church
The Church of England parish church is the Church of the Holy Spirit. St Luke's Church on Burpham Lane is used for occasional services. The parish war memorial is in the churchyard at St Luke's.
Name
There is a local difference of opinion about the pronunciation of the name "Burpham". The original pronunciation is bə:pəm, but many folk prefer to soften the -ph- to an -f- sound as more in keeping with the town's polite image.
