South Caicos lies at the southern end of the chain of the Caicos Islands. It is 8.2 square miles in area; the seventh largest island in the Turks and Caicos Islands. The population was estimated at 1,579 in 2006.

There are four villages:

  • Cockburn Harbour, pop. 811
  • Out North, pop. 706
  • The Flat, pop. contained in Out North
  • Highlands, pop. 62

South Caicos is known for excellent fishing, both deep sea and bone fishing, and scuba diving. The School for Field Studies, a global no-for-profit, accredited by Boston University, has their “Center for Marine Resource Studies” in Cockburn Harbour. Research focuses on marine ecology and natural resource management.[1] The Annual South Caicos Regatta is a large celebration that features island-wide parties, boat races, and other games.[2]

Currently, tourism is virtually nonexistent on South Caicos.
