Malltraeth Bay is the bay which opens to the sea at the end of the Malltraeth Sands, and may encompass those sands also.
The sands are the long, sandy estuary of the River Cefni as it opens to the sea. Its head is at Malltraeth, a village which takes its name from the the nature of the bay, for mall traeth means, roughly, "foul beach", though few who visit the bay would agree with such a harsh analysis.
