Tell the world what you love about your home. Each shire, from Kent to Kerry is here, with ever-growing detail; if your town or village is not in Wikishire, or if something important is missed out, then log on, then -

Add it and Edit

To begin, you can peruse the list of counties of the UK or Republic of Ireland, or even go directly to a random page! To accompany the encyclopædia we also have an interactive map of the counties of the British Isles. We also have Resources for GIS including KML files and postcode lookup tools.

Shrewsbury in Shropshire

Shrewsbury

Shrewsbury is the county town of Shropshire. It stands on a hill in a bend of the River Severn in the midst of its county, if grown from its original historic heart and trespassing over that broad water. Shrewsbury is the second largest town in the county, after Telford.

This is a historic market town, the town centre built on its original mediæval street plan and with 660 historic listed buildings. Shrewsbury Castle, a red sandstone castle fortification, and Shrewsbury Abbey were founded in 1074 and 1083 respectively, by the Norman Earl of Shrewsbury, Roger de Montgomery.

Shrewsbury serves as a cultural and commercial centre for Shropshire and a large area of the Cambrian Mountains, with retail output alone worth over £299 million a year. (Read more)
