County Durham, Cumberland

Burnhope Seat Summit
Range: Pennines
Summit: 2,451 feet NY785375

Burnhope Seat is a fell in the high moor of Burnhope Moor in the northern Pennines, standing on the border of County Durham to the east with Cumberland to the west. It stands between the heads of the Rivers Tees, South Tyne and Wear, all of which flow eastwards; the watershed between east and west of Great Britain is a little to the west at Cross Fell.

The top of Burnhope Seat is crossed by the boundary between the two counties of Cumberland and Durham and here it has two summits close by each other, of which the western summit, at 2,451 feet, is the higher and lies in Cumberland while its eastern summit in County Durham, at 2,447 feet is and provides that county's county top, its highest point. A trig point stands between them on the border.

Ascents and access

The B6277 road between Alston and Middleton-in-Teesdale passes within a mile and a half of the summit, thus providing the easiest route of ascent. The hill may also be climbed from Weardale as part of high-level circuit of Burnhope Reservoir.

There are some ski-tows on the north-west slopes of the hill - this forms the Yad Moss ski facility, which has recently been upgraded by Sport England.[1]

The entire area is designated "access land" under the terms of the Countryside and Rights of Way Act 2000.
