Winlaton Mill is halfway between Winlaton to the north-west and Whickham to the east across the Derwent. It grew up around a mill on the Derwent, which is also known as Winlaton Mill.

The industrial heritage of the are is ever present. Derwenthaugh Park, now a beauty spot by te river, is laid out on the site of the former Derwenthaugh Coke Works. Now a particularly beautiful part of the Derwent Walk.
