Weston-on-Avon is a village and parish in northern Gloucestershire adjacent to the border with Warwickshire. The ancient parish extends across the border into the latter county, incorporating the hamlets of Milcote and Lower Milcote. The population of the civil parish (which excludes Milcote) taken at the 2011 census was 170.[1] It is about three miles south-west of the town of Stratford-upon-Avon.[2]
History
The Domesday book recorded that Weston was one of about six villages in the area given to Hugh de Grandmesnil as reward for his help at the Battle of Hastings.
Notable people
- Sir John Greville, an MP in five Parliaments, was buried here in 1480.
- Robert Fisher Tomes, farmer and zoologist, was born here on 4 August 1823.
- John Trapp, vicar of Weston and Anglican Bible commentator, died here in 1669.
