West Ilsley is a village in Berkshire, amongst the Berkshire Downs, north of the town of Newbury. East Ilsley lies a mile or so southeast of the village.

West Ilsley is a small place, with a single public house, The Harrow, and a well supported cricket club The West Ilsley Cricket Club. The Ridgeway passes within a mile of the village.

History

The village has largely avoided the tumult of history, but Either West Ilsley or East Ilsley may have been the site of the Battle of Ashdown - Alfred the Great's turning-point victory over the Danes. One explanation for the name Ilsley is that it may come from Hilde-Læge which means "Battle Meadow."

The original Morland Brewery was first set up in West Ilsley in 1711.
