Wellington Hill
Range: Blackdown Hills
Summit: 892 feet ST137172
50°56’53"N, 3°13’46"W

Wellington Hill in the Blackdown Hills stands above the village of Wellington in Somerset, reaching a height of 892 feet. However this ground height is far increased by the 175-foot monument at the summit of the hill.

The hill is on the ridge of the Blackdown Hills, which marks the border of Devon to the south with Somerset to the north; the county border runs over the summit of the hill, though the monument is all on the Somerset side.

The Wellington Monument

The dominant feature of the hill today is the Wellington Monument on its summit. It stands 175 feet high, completed, after delays, in 1854 to commemorate the Duke of Wellington's victory at the Battle of Waterloo. Reckoned to be the tallest three-sided obelisk in the world, the monument stands in a tall, thin blade, modelled on a bayonet. An internal staircase leading up to a viewing platform giving wide views over Somerset and the borders of Devon.
