Watergrasshill is a village in the north-east of County Cork. It is a quieter place since the bypass was built in 2003, but still has the R639 road running through it, and it can be reached form junction 17 of the M8 motorway.
The 2016 census recorded a population of 1,346.
The village is known in the irish language as Cnocán na Biolraí, meaning 'Watercress Hill'.[1]
History
Evidence of ancient settlement in the area includes a number standing stones, fulacht fiadh, and ringfort sites in the surrounding townlands of Bishop's Island and Tinageragh.[2]
The Roman Catholic 'church, the Church of the Immaculate Conception, was completed in 1895.[3]
The Church of Ireland church in the village was built around 1820.[4] This church was deconsecrated in 1990 and has since been used as an arts venue.[5]
Sport and society
The National Ploughing Championships were held in the Watergrasshill area in 1974 and 1979.[6]
