Wroxeter

Wroxeter is a village in Shropshire, sitting beside the River Severn, about five miles south-east of Shrewsbury. Nearby is that remarkable, solitary hill known as the Wrekin, whose old name is reflected in that of modern Wroxeter and that of the ancient city which stood here.

This village was the site of the Roman city of Viroconium Cornoviorum, which was the fourth largest 'civitas' capital in Roman Britain. There are substantial visible remains of the city, dwarfing the village of today. (Read more)
