WimbledonWimbledon is a distinctive town in Surrey within the metropolitan conurbation but bounded by the great green space of Wimbledon Common which, along with the village's own qualities, preserves Wimbledon's individuality. The fame of Wimbledon comes from the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club and the Wimbledon Tennis Championships held here every year, and for Wimbledon Common, one of the largest areas of common land in the conurbation. The town is split into two sections known as the "village" and the "town", with the High Street being part of the original mediæval village, and the "town" being part of the modern development since the building of the railway station in 1838.
