Campsie's Lock on the Strabane Canal, Tyrone

Strabane Canal

The Strabane Canal is a short canal, just four miles long, in Tyrone, which in its day connected the market town of Strabane to the River Foyle and thence the port of Londonderry to the north. The canal opened in 1796, developed by the 1st Marquess of Abercorn to encourage industrial development in Strabane, within his estates, and it was designed to accommodate sea-going schooners, capable of carrying 300 tons of cargo. The canal closed in 1962, the Foyle having become unnavigable, though efforts are being made at restoration. (Read more)
