Stonehaven

Stonehaven is a town on the coast of Kincardineshire, of which it is the county town. It stands 15 miles south of Aberdeen in a sheltered position on Stonehaven Bay.

Stonehaven grew around a fishing village inhabited at least since the Iron Age, an area now known as the "Auld Toon". The harbour, of two basins, was improved in the 1820s by Robert Stevenson and with its new harbour, Stonehaven became an important centre of the 19th century herring trade.

The town has grown rapidly since the oil boom in Aberdeen. The increasing demand for new, middle-class housing has seen four new estates being appended to the town, creating an expanse of suburbs. (Read more)
