Romney MarshRomney Marsh is a sparsely populated wetland area in Sussex and into Kent, covering about 100 square miles. The silent mystery of the place has attracted writers to excess. William Camden compared it with the Nile and "I may not without reason call it the Gift of the Sea". Richard Barham in the Ingoldsbury Legends wrote that "The world according to the best geographers is divided into Europe, Asia, Africa, America, and Romney Marsh." Roads across the Marsh have always been narrow and winding, shaped by the hundreds of sewers and drainage ditches.
