Osborne House on the Isle of Wight, Hampshire

Osborne House

Osborne House is a former royal residence on Isle of Wight in Hampshire. The house was built between 1845 and 1851 for Queen Victoria and Prince Albert as a summer home and rural retreat. It became the Queen's favourite home.

Prince Albert designed the house himself in the style of an Italian Renaissance palazzo with Thomas Cubitt. After the Queen's death in 1901, the house was given to the nation, with a few rooms retained as a private royal museum dedicated to Queen Victoria. From 1903 until 1921 it was used as a junior officer training college for the Royal Navy, and today it is in the care of English Heritage and fully open to the public. (Read more)
