Old Leighlin

Old Leighlin is a small town in County Carlow, two miles west of Leighlinbridge. Once Leighlin was one of the foremost monastic houses in Leinster, with 1,500 monks, and this abbey hosted the church synod in 630 which decided that the Irish church should follow Roman conventions.

The town was a bishop's seat until the 19th century reforms of the Church of Ireland, and in the old Parliament of Ireland Old Leighlin was a 'Bishop's boroughs' in which the bishop selected the Member of Parliament. (Read more)
