Longwood, St HelenaLongwood is a village and district of the island of St Helena in the South Atlantic territory of St Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha. In 2008 the whole district had a population of 715. The district is 12.9 square miles and includes the settlement of Hutt's Gate, the island's only existing golf course and Prosperous Bay Plain, proposed as the site for St Helena's future airport. Longwood House was the residence of the deposed Emperor of the French, Napoleon Bonaparte, during his exile on the island of St Helena, from 10 December 1815 until his death on 5 May 1821. It stands on a windswept plain four miles from the capital, Jamestown. (Read more) |
