Limassol Salt Lake, in Akrotiri and Dhekelia

Limassol Salt Lake

Limassol Salt Lake is a large salt-lake in the Western Sovereign Base Area of Akrotiri and Dhekelia: the largest inland body of water in the territory and indeed in the whole island of Cyprus.

The lake is in the island's southernmost peninsula, at 34° 37' N, 37° 58' E, south-east of the sprawling city from which it is named. It spreads over four square miles but most of the lake is less than a foot deep and nowhere is it deeper than three feet. Its lowest point is 9 feet below sea level.

This is considered to be one of the eastern Mediterranean region’s most important wetlands, attracting thousands of wading birds during the migration seasons and somewhere between 2,000 and 20,000 Greater Flamingos spend the winter months on the lake. (Read more)
