Jarrow

Jarrow is an industrial town in County Durham, standing on the south bank of the River Tyne

Jarrow's name is famous from opposite ends of its history. In the eighth century Jarrow was where Bede composed the first book of English history; The Ecclesiastical History of the English People. Jarrow's rapid Victorian industrialisation as a centre for shipbuilding ended suddenly in 1935 during the Great Depression, resulting in the 1936 'Jarrow March' when labourers marched to London to protest against their unemployment.
