JarlshofJarlshof is a site close to Sumburgh Head, the very southernmost tip of Shetland, on the Mainland of the county. It is Shetland's best known prehistoric archaeological site and has been described as "one of the most remarkable archaeological sites ever excavated in the British Isles", containing remains dating from 2500 BC up to the 17th century AD. The name 'Jartlshof' is a fancy from the pen of Sir Walter Scott but the site exceeds his romances. Many ages of Shetland's history and pre-history are represented in the finds at Jarlshof, including the Neolithic, Bronze and Iron Ages, Pictish remains, a Norse longhouse and a Stuart period fortified farmhouse.
