Gotham

Gotham (pronounced Goat-am) is a village in Nottinghamshire, with a population of 1,563 at the 2011 census. The name 'Gotham' comes from the Old English gat ham, meaning 'goat home(stead)'.

The village is slandered in folk legend as a foolish village, producing stories of the "Wise Men of Gotham". These depict the people of the village as being all fools, and many a tale has been told of the antics of the men of Gotham.

The legend of this village inspired the writer of the Batman comic strips to set his stories in 'Gotham City'. A result of the connection though is that the village's signs are repeatedly stolen by Batman fans. (Read more)
