Glendalough

Glendalough is a glacial valley in County Wicklow renowned for an Early Mediæval monastic settlement founded in the 6th century by St Kevin, known as Kevin of Glendalough. It is a fine spot, well named from the Irish Gleann Dá Loch, meaning 'Valley of two lakes'.

Here Kevin's monastery throve and won a reputation for scholarship – The Book of Glendalough was written here in about 1131 – until its destruction in 1398. The monastic buildings however remain impressive in the landscape. (Read more)
