The Falkirk Wheel, Stirlingshire

Falkirk Wheel

The Falkirk Wheel is a remarkable rotating boat lift in near Falkirk in Stirlingshire, connecting the Forth and Clyde Canal with the Union Canal. It opened in 2002, reconnecting the two canals for the first time since the 1930s. Instead of recreating the long staircase of locks which once joined the two, the wheel lifts boats bodily in the water on its perfectly counter-balanced wheel, raising or lowering them by 80 feet between the canals.

The Falkirk Wheel is the only rotating boat lift of its kind in the world. (Read more)
