Dundee

Dundee is a city and the largest town of Angus. It stands on the north bank of the Firth of Tay.

The town developed into a burgh in the Middle Ages, and expanded rapidly in the 19th century largely due to the jute industry. This, along with its other major industries gave Dundee its epithet as the city of "jam, jute and journalism".

Another major industry in former days was shipbuilding; several famous ships were built here, and with it ships Dundee became a major whaling port, until that industry ceased.

Today, Dundee is promoted as the City of Discovery, in honour of Dundee's history of scientific activities and of the RRS Discovery, Scott's Antarctic ship, built in Dundee and now berthed in the city harbour. (Read more)
