Clare, Suffolk

Clare is a beautiful village in Suffolk; chiefest of the chocolate-box villages in the south of the county. Clare is on the north bank of the River Stour which divides Suffolk from Essex. It is a place with more history to it than many a sizable town.

The wealth of the village from wool and cloth in the Middle Ages and early modern period has provided Clare with a vast "wool church" and many attractive houses from these ages. The historical record is far earlier though: a community from Anglo-Saxon times, through the Norman Conquest, the Reformation, agricultural and industrial revolutions, and the present day. (Read more)
